I think I can make up a backstory to this...
They were doing harsh things to Shadow, claiming it was "for the better" and "improving skills", but it was just tiring Shadow out. (This was when Shadow was smaller, and still growing)
Gerald came into the room. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO HIM?!" He shouted, he had them stop and also saw they had taken his inhibitor rings, making Shadow even more tired.
Finally, Shadow just passed out.
Gerald picked Shadow up, and carried him off to the lab. (That brings us to this pic)
Shadow wasn't honestly injured, but very tired. So Gerald just allowed Shadow to sleep.
Gerald was going to put Shadow in a healing chamber, but he wasn't hurt.
